Rural homes need a critical-load inventory first

A generic “whole-home” label can hide the real decision. Begin with water, heat, drainage, refrigeration, communications and any medical or mobility needs. Then document optional loads and the behaviours the household is willing to change during an outage.

  • Well pump, pressure tank and water-treatment equipment.
  • Sump, septic, drainage or lift equipment.
  • Heating system, circulation pumps, controls and any fuel backup.
  • Refrigeration, freezer, cooking and communications.
  • Outbuildings, gates, livestock or property-security systems.
  • EV charging, hot tub, shop loads and other equipment that may be deferred.

When a battery-and-generator combination deserves consideration

A hybrid approach can separate short interruptions from long outages. A battery may handle immediate, quiet operation for selected loads, while a generator supports longer-duration needs or recharging. Whether that arrangement is appropriate depends on the actual equipment, controls, isolation, electrical design and operating plan.

Do not start with capacity

First define the outage objective and priority loads. Equipment size, transfer arrangements and code compliance must then be confirmed by the appropriate qualified professionals.

What must be verified before installation

The Electrical Safety Authority administers notifications of electrical work and enforces Ontario’s electrical safety requirements. A licensed electrical contractor or other appropriate professional should confirm service capacity, conductors, protection, transfer equipment, isolation, placement, fuel and installation requirements.
