How to keep a well pump running during a power outage.

Start by identifying the pump and electrical information, deciding how much water the household needs, and separating the well from every other load competing for backup power. Do not choose equipment from the pump’s running watts alone.

A five-step well-pump backup planning process

  1. Define the water objective

    Decide whether the goal is normal household water, limited essential use, periodic pressure-tank recovery, livestock needs or simply enough water to bridge a short interruption.

  2. Identify the pump and electrical arrangement

    Collect the pump model or nameplate, voltage, breaker information, control box, pressure system and any available installation records. If the pump is inaccessible, record what can be confirmed without guessing.

  3. List the other essential loads

    A well rarely operates alone during an outage. Heating controls, sump or septic equipment, refrigeration, communications and lighting may share the same backup system.

  4. Choose the operating strategy

    Compare automatic operation with a managed sequence. Running fewer loads at once can change the practical backup requirement, but the operating plan must be realistic for everyone in the home.

  5. Have the design verified

    Ask the appropriate qualified professional to confirm starting current, capacity, wiring, protection, transfer, isolation, code and installation requirements.

Information to collect before requesting equipment quotes

  • Clear photos of the pump label, control box, pressure tank and relevant electrical panels where safely accessible.
  • Breaker size and voltage as documented, not estimated.
  • Known pump depth, horsepower and installation records.
  • Typical outage length and the longest outage the household wants to plan for.
  • Water storage already available and acceptable conservation measures.
  • A separate list of every other load expected to operate during the outage.

Generator, battery or a staged water plan?

A generator may suit long outages where fuel and maintenance are acceptable. A battery may suit quiet automatic operation for a defined set of loads. A hybrid may separate short outages from long ones. Some households can also reduce the electrical requirement by storing water or operating the pump in planned intervals, but that depends on the actual plumbing, pressure system and household needs.

Avoid a common shortcut

A nameplate running value is not, by itself, a backup-system specification. Motor starting behaviour and the rest of the connected system must be assessed by a qualified professional.

Transfer and isolation are not do-it-yourself decisions

Backup equipment must not energize utility lines or expose the home to an unsafe connection. The Electrical Safety Authority administers notifications of electrical work in Ontario. Use a licensed electrical contractor for the design and installation decisions that fall within regulated electrical work.
