Why is my hydro bill so high in Ontario?
A high bill can come from higher consumption, when electricity is used, seasonal rate thresholds, delivery charges, an estimated or corrected meter reading, or a new load. Diagnose the change before buying equipment to solve it.
Five checks before blaming the rate or the equipment
Compare kilowatt-hours, not only dollars
Look at the same billing period from the previous year when possible. A cost increase with similar consumption points to a different issue than a large increase in kWh.
Check the number of billing days
A longer cycle can make a bill look unusually high. Compare daily average consumption as well as the total.
Confirm the meter reading
Look for estimated, corrected or missing readings and compare the bill with the utility portal. A sudden adjustment may collect usage that was not billed earlier.
Identify the price plan
Ontario utility customers may use Time-of-Use, Ultra-Low Overnight or Tiered pricing. The same monthly consumption can cost differently depending on timing or the tier threshold.
Find what changed in the home
Heating, cooling, pumps, EV charging, hot water, a hot tub, dehumidification, construction equipment or a failing control can create a step-change in consumption.
Loads that are easy to overlook
- Electric resistance backup heat operating more often than expected.
- A well, sump, septic or circulation pump running more frequently.
- A hot tub, pool pump, heater or dehumidifier operating through colder weather.
- An EV charging during a more expensive price period.
- A second refrigerator, freezer, workshop heater or outbuilding load.
- A rate-plan change that no longer matches the household schedule.
Divide total kWh by billing days. Then compare that daily average with a similar season before drawing conclusions from the dollar total.
Change the lowest-regret item first
The next step may be correcting a billing issue, changing operating hours, choosing a better price plan, repairing a control, collecting interval data or investigating a specific load. Solar or storage may eventually fit, but neither should be prescribed from a high bill alone.
