Is solar worth it in Ontario?

Solar can be worthwhile when the home has a suitable site, enough electricity use, realistic production assumptions, an acceptable financing path and enough time to receive the benefit. It is not automatically worthwhile because a rebate exists or because a proposal shows a large lifetime savings number.

Use a six-part test before deciding

1 · Load

How much electricity do you use?

Start with actual bills and interval data where available. Consider future loads such as an EV, heat pump, hot tub or workshop separately from current use.

2 · Timing

When do you use it?

Annual consumption alone does not show how daytime production, exports and the chosen rate plan interact.

3 · Site

What can the roof or property support?

Orientation, shade, roof condition, available area and structural questions can change the practical system before economics are considered.

4 · Economics

Which assumptions create the payback?

Compare gross cost, financing, degradation, maintenance, rate escalation and time in the home. Treat a vendor’s savings projection as a claim until its inputs are clear.

5 · Rules

How will net metering apply?

Utility process, eligible system size, account setup and credit treatment matter. Verify the current rules with your local distribution company.

6 · Sequence

What else may change?

Heating, storage, electrical service and efficiency work can change the right solar decision. Avoid sizing from a load profile that is about to change.

What Ontario net metering changes

Net metering lets eligible customers send surplus renewable generation to the grid in exchange for bill credits. The Ontario Energy Board states that credits may be carried forward for up to 12 months before unused credits are reduced to zero. That makes annual consumption and export timing important when reviewing an installer’s savings claim.

Hydro One’s program information says micro-generation projects may be up to 12 kW and that eligible storage can be paired with renewable generation. Rules and connection requirements can differ by local distribution company, so the applicable utility should be confirmed before purchase.

Pause when the answer depends on one optimistic number

  • The proposal does not show the usage period used for sizing.
  • The production model does not state shading or system-loss assumptions.
  • The savings figure treats the entire hydro bill as avoidable.
  • Future electricity rates are escalated without showing the rate.
  • The calculation assumes an incentive without confirming current eligibility.
  • Roof, panel, transformer or interconnection work is outside the quoted scope.
  • A battery is added without a clear backup or operating objective.

The decision can be “yes,” “not yet,” or “change the scope”

A useful solar assessment does not begin with a preferred answer. It may support proceeding, collecting better evidence, reducing the system size, coordinating another upgrade first, or waiting. The strongest decision is the one that still makes sense when optimistic assumptions are reduced.
